Maybe you are on a cruise only having 10 hours to see Kailua-Kona. Or perhaps you have business elsewhere on the Big Island and only have time to spend one full day in the city. Or maybe you just want to do a Kona day trip from Oahu, Maui, or Kauai.
Whatever your reason, I know it can be overwhelming to choose between the seemingly endless options. I never feel like I have enough time in town, and I lived on the island for a year.
But I’ve used my travel agent skills at itinerary planning and pulled the best things to do in Kona in a day. There are endless combinations of activities, and some don’t have to be done in the designated times of day below, but I am going to help you organize them so you can create an itinerary that works for you!
It’s kind of like a pick-your-own-adventure. Choose about 1-2 activities per time of day and you’ve got yourself a full day’s itinerary in Kona.

Spending the Morning in Kona
Kona Coffee Tour
Start your day in Kona with a tour of one of the world-famous Kona Coffee farms. This is an amazing way to learn about how this unique and flavorful coffee is grown, harvested, and processed. You can even sample some fresh brews while you’re on a tour. Learn all about the history of this delicious beverage as you explore the lush Hawaiian countryside.
My favorite Kona Coffee farms are:
- Heavenly Hawaiian Coffee Farm – closer to Kona, pool setting looking down on coffee orchards out towards the ocean, and unique roasts like one put through a Mexican peanut roaster
- Sacred Grounds Coffee Farm – further out in Captain Cook, a quiet sanctuary of sorts with a porch overlooking Kealakekua Bay, and gorgeous pottery made by the coffee farmer
Other notable Kona Coffee farms are Mountain Thunder Coffee Farm, Kona Joe Coffee Co., and Greenwell Coffee Farm. You really can’t go wrong with whichever farm you choose.
Whale Watching Tour
A morning whale watching tour from Kona is an amazing way to start the day and experience the beautiful creatures of Hawaii. From December through March, humpback whales migrate to the warm waters off the coast of Kona, and it’s a sight you won’t want to miss!
On a whale watching tour, you’ll be able to spot these majestic mammals in their natural habitat as they breach and spout water into the air. You may even get lucky enough to witness calves swimming alongside their mothers.

Snorkeling Tour to Kealakekua Bay
One way to spend your morning is by taking a snorkeling tour to Kealakekua Bay departing from Kona. This crystal-clear bay, is home to an incredible variety of marine life and vibrant coral reefs. With its calm waters, abundance of colorful fish, and favorite hangout for dolphins, it’s no wonder that this spot has become one of Hawaii’s most popular snorkeling destinations. Not to mention its historical significance, marked by the white Captain Cook Monument.
On your tour, you’ll be able to explore this majestic underwater world while learning about the local flora and fauna from experienced guides. So grab your fins and get ready for an unforgettable adventure!

Snorkeling Kahalu’u Beach
Kahalu’u Beach is one of the best spots to go snorkeling in Kona. Located just a few miles south of Kailua-Kona, this beach offers beautiful clear waters and lava rock craigs creating homes for a diversity of marine life. With its calm waves and shallow depths, it’s the perfect place for both beginner and experienced snorkelers alike.
Surfing
The Big Island is not known for its great surfing conditions, but there is some surfing that can be done on the island.
Kahalu’u Beach is a another great spot for those looking to ride the waves in Kona. Whether you’re an experienced surfer or just beginning your journey, you can rent a board and hit the water at this beautiful beach. If you’d like some guidance, there are also surfing lessons available here.
Pine Trees Beach is a popular beach for locals to surf due to its consistent waves and breaks, and it’s off the beaten path for tourists. You’ll need to bring your own board as there isn’t a rental shack on the beach.

Helicopter Tour
Seeing the Big Island from above is an experience like no other. Taking a helicopter tour out of Kona gives you the chance to explore the beautiful landscape, stunning beaches, and lush vegetation that make up this unique island. With its breathtaking views, it’s easy to see why taking a helicopter tour is a special activity in Kona!

Pu’uhonua O Honaunau
If you’re looking to venture out a bit from Kona and explore an iconic, Big Island historical landmark, then Pu’uhonua O Honaunau is an absolute must-see. Located just south of Kailua-Kona, this ancient Hawaiian site, also know as the Place of Refuge, was a sanctuary for those who broke traditional laws or committed crimes against their chiefs.
Today, visitors can explore the area and learn about its rich history by visiting interpretive sites such as temples, royal fishponds, and heiau (sacred places). So if you’re ready to take in some culture while exploring Hawaii’s stunning landscape, head over to Pu’uhonua O Honaunau!
Author Suggestion: stop at the Painted Church or the Paleaku Gardens Peace Sanctuary along the way as they are both nearby

Hiking
Before the heat of the midday sun, go for a hike in the various Kona terrains.
Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park has a trail that passes a small petroglyph field, Aimakapa Fishpond, and leads to Honokohau Beach/Aiopio Fish Trap with historic sites like Pu’uoina Heiau and where sea turtle sightings are almost guaranteed.
Konami South Beach access at the south end of Ali’i Dr offers a short 1-mile roundtrip hike through a black lava field along the coastline, walking the maintained Keauhou Kainaliu Beach Rd. Don’t be surprised if you run into herds of wild goats.
For a completely different view, hike through the Kona Cloud Forest on the Makuala O’oma Trail. The network of thick, tropical forest trails alternate between from being narrow and root-filled to wide and groomed. As you are at higher elevation, it is cooler and also shaded, so dress accordingly.

Spending the Afternoon in Kona
Kona Salt Farm Tour
For a “seasoned” experience in Kona, take the Kona Salt Farm Tour. At this one-of-a-kind destination, visitors can learn about the history and process of Hawaiian sea salt production while exploring the beautiful coastline of Kalihi Point.
The tour begins with an educational walk to the shoreline learning about the geography and history of how salt farming began before continuing around the farm to observe the various stages of sea salt processing.
I got salted out with all the different flavors of sea salts sampling at the end, but in a good way! It was hard to decide which one to buy for myself and also bring home as souvenirs for friends!

Seahorse Farm Tour
Claiming to be one of Hawaii’s most popular attractions, Ocean Rider is one of the world’s first farm raised seahorse facilities since 1998. On this rare tour, you’ll get to observe, learn, and even hold with your fingers these fascinating creatures which are in danger of facing extinction. It’s an experience that both nature-lovers and marine enthusiasts won’t want to miss!
Kona Farmers Markets
If you’re looking for a great way to experience the local culture of Kona, then look no further than the farmers markets! Shopping at these vibrant markets is a wonderful way to discover some of the island’s best produce and artisanal goods. From fresh fruits and vegetables to handmade jewelry and art, there’s something for everyone here. Plus, it’s an excellent opportunity to meet some of the locals who are passionate about their craft and listen to live music.
So if you want an authentic experience that takes you off the beaten path in Kona, make sure to check out one of its many farmers markets!

Did you know there are craft breweries on the Big Island? Kona is getting itself on the map with companies like Kona Brewing Company and Ola Brewing Company.
The Kona Brewing Company tour will take you through on the best-known craft breweries in the US. This top-notch brewery offers an hour long guided tour that takes you through their shipping area, brewing facility, storage coolers and tasting room. Learn about the brewery’s sustainability efforts and brewing processes, discover their ingredient sources, and understand what goes into crafting beer in Hawaii! And of course…try beer samples!
Ola Brewing Company creates more than just a variety of beers. They are experimenting with alcoholic ciders, seltzers, and even teas. While they do have some staple flavors that they keep on their menu, you’ll also find rotating new flavors, so no two visits will be the same.
Shopping Ali’i Drive
No day trip to Kona would be complete without visiting Ali’i Drive, the best place in town to go shopping for unique and local souvenirs. This scenic stretch of road is lined with shops and boutiques that offer a variety of Hawaiian items, from handmade jewelry to locally-crafted art pieces.
Shopping at these stores gives visitors the chance to find one-of-a-kind gifts while supporting small businesses in the area. Plus, you’ll get an authentic taste of Kona’s culture when browsing through all the items available!

Spending the Evening in Kona
Night Snorkel with Manta Rays
One of my most memorable experiences and an absolute must-do is one of the most unique thing to do in Kona: night snorkeling with manta rays. This incredible adventure allows you to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat as they feed off the plankton that congregate around blue lighting while you hang on, head in the water, and watch the show.
Witness beautiful choreography as they swoop, glide, and flip in the ocean inches from your face! It’s an unforgettable experience that will make your time in Kona truly special.

Luau

Mauna Kea for Sunset and Stargazing
One of the best ways to end a day in Kona is to take a drive up to Mauna Kea for sunset and stargazing. Located just over an hour away from Kona, Mauna Kea, technically the tallest mountain on earth from base to tip, offers breathtaking views over the Big Island as well as some of the world’s clearest night skies.
As the sun sets, you’ll be able to admire its beautiful hues while watching it sink slowly to bed. Once darkness falls, stay around for some awe-inspiring stargazing of the Milky Way that will leave you amazed at our universe’s beauty!
Drive yourself up the mountain yourself or take a guided tour to educate you and take away the stress of driving.
Be aware that altitude sickness is a real thing and hits everyone differently. I made it up only as far as the visitor center and not to the summit and I was feeling dizzy and nauseous.

Entertainment and Drinks
Perhaps being adventuresome isn’t how you want to end the night.
Find a restaurant or bar with live music to entertain the night away. Many locations offer nightly music or have a calendar schedule.
Two options that offer nightly music in Kona:
- Papa Kona – cozy ambience dine with waves crashing softly below your table
- Huggos on the Rocks – a lively place with sand literally between your toes
Ola Brewing Company offers trivia night weekly. You and your table can compete against others in the room with your knowledge of random facts all while drinking locally made craft brews made with local ingredients. I have yet to win a trivia night, but I have tied for 2nd place lol!
Watch Sunset from a Beach
A romantic way to finish the day is to find a secluded spot in the sand on one of the beautiful beaches around Kona and watch the sunset. As the sun sets below the horizon, soak in the afterglow. If you’re lucky, you might see wildlife like sea turtles basking on the sand or humpback whales breaching in the distance.
Some beaches to check out a colorful sunset are:
- Kua Bay Beach – popular with locals and tourists alike, this beach offers soft white sands and aqua blue waves
- Aiopio Fish Trap – a large stretch of white sand beach that requires a short hike and an almost guaranteed sea turtle sighting
- Old Kona Airport State Recreation Park – busy location within town with tidepools to explore
With its breathtaking scenery and calming atmosphere, it’s no wonder why some people say that there’s nothing more magical than watching a Hawaiian sunset from a beach in Kona.

Kona Brewing Company – tiki torch ambience with creative pizzas and housemade beers to pair it with.
How I Would Spend a Day in Kona
I am a cram-everything-you-can-in-a-day type of traveler, trying to make my day efficient and full. So, if you would ask me personally how I would spend a day in Kona, it may not be for everyone, but this is what I would do.
- Due to time constraint, eat breakfast at my hotel or condo
- 7:00am: take a whale watching tour with Hawaiian Adventures
- 9:30am: pop over to Aiopio Fish Trap to see some sea turtles
- 11:00am: take the Heavenly Hawaiian Coffee Farm tour
- 12:30pm: if it’s Wed or Fri, hit up Ho’olulu Farmers Market, finding lunch there – otherwise grab some poke at Da Poke Shack and eat it on Magic Sands Beach
- 2:00pm: shop around Ali’i Marketplace and along Ali’i Drive around Kona Inn Shopping Village
- 5:00pm: beer tasting at Ola Brewing Company
- 6:00pm: dinner at Kona Brewing Company
- 9:00pm: take a manta ray night snorkel tour with Hawaii Island & Ocean Tours

For Big Island hotels, Booking.com is amazing because you can often reserve your room with no money down. If you are looking for an Airbnb condo with a kitchen and more space, don’t forget to check VRBO for potentially better prices and options.

I recommend looking at Skyscanner for finding cheap flights. Pro Tip: check if flying into Hilo is cheaper than flying into Kona.
🛂 Do I need a passport to visit Hawaii?
NO — If you are a US citizen, you do not need a passport as Hawaii is part of the United States. If you are from out of the country, the same passport and visa requirements are the same as entering anywhere in the United States from your country.
